Shortly before my 66th birthday, I began to notice a tremor in my right hand when holding my cell phone. Thought that was a little odd. But then came the stiffness. When I couldn't tie my sneakers one afternoon while at the beach, I knew I needed to see my physician. Within a couple of weeks, I had an appointment which led to the suspicion of Parkinsons. However, an MRI of the brain was ordered and found to be normal.
Now I had a visit with a neurologist who gave me several tasks to perform. That along with her observations and our input ended in a no diagnosis at that point. However, a few months later and I returned for further evaluation. I was now diagnosed with PD around my 66th birthday. The neurologist order up a prescription of carbidopa/levadopa which I continue to use almost 2 years later. However, what was to come was my dealing with my employer and the Federal Aviation Administration . For it is the FAA that sets the standards for maintaining the necessary medical criteria in order to be eligible for a medical certificate. For the time being, I stopped flying as a captain pending evaluations and further assessments.
